Baseball pitching mechanics, compared side by side
Practical guide ยท Updated August 8, 2026
Pitching is a sequence, not a single pose. WithCoach lets a player and coach align two deliveries at leg lift, foot strike, or ball release, then inspect how timing and body positions change on both sides of that moment.
The app combines side-by-side playback, a shared sync point, individual frame steps, drawing annotations, and speeds down to 1/8x. Local comparisons are unlimited on the Free plan; exports and sharing include a WithCoach watermark.
How to record useful baseball video
Use video to support coaching observation, not to diagnose pain or injury. Record a complete delivery from a safe position and keep the pitcher, mound, and landing area visible.
- Open-side view: stand outside the field of play and capture the full stride, throwing arm, and follow-through.
- Rear view: record from a protected position behind the pitcher to review direction toward the plate.
- Keep camera height, distance, and zoom consistent when comparing separate sessions.
Four moments worth comparing
Balance and leg lift
Compare posture, head position, hand timing, and how the pitcher begins moving toward the plate.
Stride and foot strike
Review direction, stride length, front-side stability, and the relationship between pelvis and torso rotation.
Release
Set a shared point near ball release to compare trunk position, arm path, extension, and head location.
Deceleration
Follow the motion past release to review balance and how the body absorbs the delivery.
A repeatable analysis workflow
- Select an attempt and a reference delivery filmed from a comparable view.
- Choose the same event in both clips, such as front-foot strike or ball release, and lock the sync.
- Scrub backward to see how each pitcher arrived there, then forward through deceleration.
- Mark one visible coaching point with a line, arrow, angle, or circle.
- Save the review and repeat from the same camera position after the coaching change.
A useful review does not need dozens of marks. One clearly synchronized difference, one visual cue, and one new attempt give the athlete something concrete to act on. The next comparison then shows whether that change held.

What is the best sync point for pitching video?
Front-foot strike is useful for sequencing questions, while ball release is useful for extension and posture. The best sync point depends on the specific coaching question.
Can WithCoach analyze batting as well as pitching?
Yes. WithCoach is movement-agnostic: any two eligible videos can be synchronized, stepped through, annotated, and compared.
Is video analysis a substitute for medical assessment?
No. WithCoach is a coaching and visual-analysis tool. Pain, suspected injury, and return-to-play decisions belong with qualified medical professionals.
